REALITY CHECK: For-profit long-term care homes only care about profits, not seniors’ lives

In a recent interview with the Star’s editorial board, Conservative Party Leader Erin O’Toole said: “it really didn’t matter if there was public versus private ownership” of long-term care homes. Oh really? Here are the facts:

A recent report showed that Ontario's for-profit nursing homes have 78% more COVID-19 deaths than non-profit homes and showed that chain private ownership is one of the main risk factors for serious outbreaks.

Pre-pandemic research repeatedly revealed that for-profit homes have serious and ongoing quality of care problems.

Canadians were also shocked to learn recently that several for-profit homes offered millions of dollars in dividends to their shareholders in the midst of the pandemic, even when there were significant outbreaks in their facilities – and when some had received emergency government funding.

Let's face it, the Conservatives, like Justin Trudeau's Liberals, are out of touch.

Jagmeet Singh and the NDP will take profits out of the care of our loved ones and implement a Care Guarantee.

Canadians deserve no less.
